Mary Modeen is an artist/academic whose research links creative practice with interdisciplinary academic studies in the humanities, particularly philosophy, literature, feminist and indigenous studies. Her research has several threads: perception as a cognitive and interpretive process, and place-based research, which tends to connect cultural values, history and embodied experience. As such, this work usually combines creative art practice and writing.
Her PhD supervision is also characterised by these interdisciplinary investigations, linking studio practice with academic enquiry. International research networks, three of which Modeen co-convenes, are central in conducting the critical discourse which address, challenge and strengthen these research insights. She is also the DJCAD Associate Dean (Internationalisation).

Connecting Irish and Scottish Artists and Writers with Rural Practices and Narratives.
The objective of The Rural Reimagined: Connecting Irish and Scottish Artists and Writers with Rural Practices and Narratives is to enrich connections and establish new links between Irish and Scottish artists and writers, including selected members of four existing place-based research networks, whose creative practices focus on rurality.
As Co-Investigator, alongside Principle Investigator Dr Ciara Healy-Musson (IT Carlow), and with Consultant Dr Iain Biggs (DJCAD Honorary Research Fellow), this 6-month project included two practicum, one in both Ireland and Scotland, and a moderated web-based forum, with the intention of leading to further collaborative projects.
Assisted by the Royal Irish Academy and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, this project will support new methodologies for engaging diverse publics in their rural heritage as a means of increasing environmental awareness. The project recognises a developing spectrum of interest across the arts in the complex value of rurality.
